Update

We look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield School. This week our kindness activities focused on demonstrating kindness towards others by “doing what we can.” Classrooms listened to a read aloud with Mr. Patry and Mr. Magowan to discuss the actions we can take to ensure our community is cared for. If we all contribute in small ways, we can make a huge difference.

Students worked collaboratively to create messages to be shared with our community, and some classrooms contributed to the Global Bird Count Project by noticing and sharing the type and number of birds in our area. The winter cards that were shared in December with a nearby care facility were greatly appreciated by its members, and their leadership team made a requested for Copperfield students to send Valentine’s message to their residents. Students worked in buddies to create special messages focused on Kindness to be shared with those residents.

Teachers and Support Staff Convention will be held on Thursday, February 15 and Friday, February 16 for all CBE teachers and support staff. There is no school for students on these days. Conventions give teachers an opportunity to reflect on and learn about new and innovative pedagogical practices and theories. The 2024 Convention is a core component of teacher professionalism, which in turn enhances student learning.

I wanted to wish everyone a wonderful Family Day Weekend, and hope that your family is able to enjoy some of the amazing activities offered on this weekend both in our community and the greater area.

Copperfield has heart!

Sincerely,

Mike Magowan

Pink Shirt Day is February 28, 2024

Schools from across Canada will wear pink to support bullying prevention awareness, education and programs. Copperfield’s Gr 3 Molsberry/Williams and Gr 4 Mrs. Dorish’s students will lead a school assembly honouring Pink Shirt Day on February 28.  Building healthy relationships is one of the best ways to prevent bullying and create safe environments. The need to “lift Each other Up” and have greater acceptance, respect, and inclusion for everyone is so important. We encourage all students to wear pink on this day to show their support.  For more information, please visit the Pink Shirt Day website.

The City of Calgary - Storm Pond Winter Safety 2024

Keep you and your family safe this winter by staying off community storm ponds. Prior to lacing up, it’s important to remember that not all ice surfaces are safe for skating. While your community storm pond may look inviting, recreational activities are not allowed on them.

Storm ponds play an important role, helping to provide protection from overland flooding while returning cleaner water back to the river, but they have hidden hazards that make them dangerous to people and pets. Even if the ice looks frozen solid, conditions are still dangerous. Unlike a normal pond, water levels are constantly changing which creates unstable air gaps between the ice and water. Plus, water in these ponds contains sediment and contaminants, which weaken the ice. That’s why it’s not safe to skate, walk or play on storm ponds. Instead, find a safe City or community outdoor skating rink near you at Calgary.ca/rinks
