Update
We look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield School. June is National Indigenous History Month. In addition to the inclusion of Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing and knowing in and through our work throughout the school year, National Indigenous Peoples Day is honoured annually on June 21, and also marks the beginning of summer solstice. In Indigenous communities, summer solstice signifies a time of renewal and ceremonies which are connected to the seasons, land and spirituality. National Indigenous Peoples Day is for all Canadians to recognize the diverse cultures and acknowledge Indigenous Peoples contributions, both historical and contemporary.
On June 21, students may participate in land-based learning opportunities by exploring the pond spaces looking for seasonal change and learn about the teachings connected to the summer solstice. Copperfield students have had the opportunity to learn alongside Elder Shirley Hill the past few weeks, with each class experiencing two hours of oral story and two hours of Hoop dancing. On June 21, students will have the opportunity to experience a Hoop Dance, Fancy Shawl Dance, and Men’s Fancy Bustle Dance during a presentation on June 21 to further build our capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect.
Thank you to those volunteers who have committed to supporting our activity day events on Thursday June 27. We have a number of stations planned and I know students are very excited for this day. Please ensure your student comes to school prepared to be outdoors for a few hours. It is recommended students bring a hat, water bottle, and apply sunscreen prior to coming to school.
This week teachers are finishing their assessment and reporting processes, and student report cards will be available on June 27 for families to view. Report Cards are viewed online only and can be found within your MyCBE account. Please review your MYCBE Account for any outstanding fees. The account balances remaining are for goods and services including noon supervision and student supplies, and we are encouraging families to settle their accounts this week.
Copperfield has heart!
Sincerely,
Mike Magowan
