 UPDATE

It has been another great week of learning at Copperfield School. Our Grade 1 students hosted a wonderful Pink Shirt Day assembly emphasizing the importance of kindness. It was wonderful to see Copperfield students wearing pink and joining schools from across Canada to support bullying prevention awareness.  We are very proud of the work students and staff have engaged in over the month of February learning about empathy, kindness and developing their understanding of Social/Emotional intelligence.

Let’s spring into Reading! The annual Copperfield School Read-A-Thon hosted by the Copperfield School Council and Fundraising Society is set to begin March 2-13. Students brought home a Read-a-Thon Information page and pledge form, outlining all the key information and dates. Throughout the two week Read-a-Thon Copperfield students will participate in literacy games, special reading activities, themed days and special guest readers will join our classrooms. Thank you to the Copperfield School Council and Fundraising Society and all the volunteers that support this event, and all funds raised will be used to increase our literacy resources such as decodable books, and phonemic resources for each classroom.

Thank you for your support!  Copperfield has heart!

 READ-A-THON

With a new season just around the corner, let’s SPRING into reading!

Our 8th annual Copperfield Read-A-Thon will take place from March 2nd - 13th and you can already begin to gather sponsors to collect pledges for books read by students. The amount that sponsors choose to donate is up to you! Throughout our Read-A-Thon, students will have the opportunity to participate in having guest readers join their classes virtually and in person. These guest readers may include a variety of readers such as CBE professionals, emergency service personnel, authors, artists, and athletes. Top fundraisers from each grade will be put into a draw for a prize. There will also be fun prizes for our readers, including the chance to be the principal for a day! Please read through the pledge form that was sent home with students for more information on specific dates and how to collect cash or cheques from your sponsors and return them to the school. All money raised will go to literacy resources for our school. We encourage all students to participate for the love of reading!

 ATTENDANCE

We continue to have a significant number of late arrivals and absences.

Students are required to enter and exit through their assigned doors.

A reminder: students entering through the main front entrance will be marked late.

Regular school attendance has a huge impact on a student’s academic success starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school. Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and in life.

We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. When students miss too much school it can cause them to fall behind academically.  Regular school attendance is an important life skill on the path to graduation and future employment.

Did you know?

§  By grade 3, students with regular attendance are more likely to read at grade level.

§  By grade 6, regular attendance is a predictor of high school completion.

§  By grade 9, regular attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than test scores.

Please ensure that your child attends school every day and arrives on time.   Here are a few practical tips to help support regular attendance:

§  Listen and show an interest in your child’s day.

§  Encourage your child to do well in school and praise their success.

§  Help your child maintain daily routines such as, eating breakfast, turning off electronics two hours before bedtime and going to bed early.

§  If possible try to schedule dental and medical appointments after school hours or on days off from school.

§  Send your child to school unless sick.

§  It may be a concern if your child is often sick, complains about going to school and/or struggles with school work.

§  Ask for help from the school before the problem gets too big. No problem is too small.

Let us know how we can best support you and your child so they can attend school regularly and punctually.

WAIVERS

No child is ever denied access to an education in The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) because of an inability to pay. If you cannot afford the fees, there are several ways to qualify for a central fee waiver.

Waiver applications for the current school year are found online through your MyCBE account and are available from the start of the school year until June 30.

More information can be found on the Fee’s and Waivers page.
