Important Information: Winter Celebration

November 17, 2023

Dear Copperfield School Families,

We are very excited to be hosting our Copperfield Winter Celebration in December.  Our students in grades 1-5 will perform on either December 13 or 14, and our kindergarten students will perform on December 20, 2023.  The winter celebration is an opportunity for our community to gather and most importantly for students to showcase their learning.  Copperfield students, staff and Ms. Bohan have worked extremely hard to create a winter celebration centered around the theme “Winter and Music”.

As you are aware, our school operates at full capacity and therefore space is at a premium.  This includes the capacity of the gym space and the number of chairs available. We have secured additional chairs to support the student performance in order to offer the maximum amount of seating for parents/guardians.  However, we are still limited in our space and gym capacity as set by the Fire Code.

We understand that tickets and limited seating is not ideal, therefore, we are trying a new format this year.  We have scheduled the concert to occur over two nights, with two performance on each evening.  Each evening will host two concerts; Concert A (Wed) & C (Thurs) from 6:00pm – 6:30pm and Concert B (Wed) & D (Thurs) from 7:15pm – 7:45pm.  Concert A & C will consist of Grades 1-3 classes and Concert B & D will showcase Grades 4-5 classrooms. This will allow for a smaller number of students performing at a time, and allow for greater availability of seats for families.

We still have limited gym capacity, and we encourage additional family members to attend the day time rehearsal performances in order to free up space in the evenings.  I ask that you carefully read the information below to understand the specific details necessary for a successful winter celebration for all.

Students will arrive with their family at the designated times of their concert.  Students will go to their classroom and will be supervised by their teacher until the performance begins.

When the performance is finished, all students will return to their classroom with their teacher.  Audience member will be asked to wait until all students have exited the gym before leaving.  Family members will then go to their child’s classroom to connect with the teacher and their child.

Once you have picked up your child, we ask that all families exit the school to allow for the school staff to prepare for the next concert performance.

About the Winter Celebration

Gr. 1-3 Concert:

This concert is a story by John Jacobson called Snow Day. It tells the story of what happens to school when there is too much snow. Students have been helping create actions to the songs and are looking forward to sharing them with you.

Gr. 4/5 Concert:

This concert is about what to do with a musical idea. It follows the journey of students seeing how different rhythms can be used to make up songs. In this concert the students will be singing, playing djembes, boom whackers and hand bells.

What Students Should Wear

Gr. 1 Students will be playing the parts of students and are asked to wear their favourite pajamas or festive winter clothing.

Gr. 2 and 3 Students will be playing the part of teachers and are asked to dress up in what they think a teacher would wear.

Gr. 4 and 5 students are encouraged to wear their favourite outfit.

*Students are encouraged to wear items that they already have at home in their closets.

Student Performance

The winter celebration is a school-based production and the focus of this opportunity is for students to develop confidence as public presenters, to showcase their learning with families, and to enjoy themselves.  We understand that families are excited to view the performance, and everyone should be respectful of sightlines and seating spaces.  All Copperfield members are expected to maintain appropriate audience manners and that everyone is simply there to enjoy the show.  Please recognize a lot of time and energy goes into creating these performances and the school is trying to do the best with what space is available. We truly look forward to the winter celebration and the opportunity to come together as a community.
