Update
We look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield School. Thank you to our Grade 5 students and staff for providing all members of the Copperfield School Community the opportunity to honour and remember the men and women who have served, and continue to serve Canada during times of war, conflict, and peace. We also wish to thank everyone who donated to the Veteran’s food bank and the Poppy campaign.
November 13 –19 is Métis Week, a week to celebrate Métis culture, history, and contributions, including recognition of Louis Riel’s birthday on November 16. The Métis people have a unique history, culture, and language. They are Otimpemisiwak, "the people that own themselves". They continue to stand strong behind their heritage, preserving the stories, traditions, and ways of life that distinguish the Métis from other Indigenous groups within Canada. The Métis culture dates as far back as the 17th century, known for its distinctive clothing, art, festive music, and dance.
In support of student and staff well-being, the instructional calendar includes a short fall break for students and school-based staff. The number of instructional hours in the school year remains unchanged. Two non-instructional days combined with a day in lieu for Remembrance Day allow for this break. This decision responds to what was heard through an engagement process related to transitioning to one calendar this fall. For 2023-24, this break will happen Nov. 9 – 14. CBE Staff will be participating in an Indigenous Education Professional Learning Day on November 9, 2023. This day of professional learning named Maatoomsii’Pookaiks | Children First is designed for all staff to develop and apply foundational knowledge of Indigenous Education in the CBE, regardless of role. We are committed to acknowledging and responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action, which includes providing education on the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Indigenous rights, Indigenous law, and Indigenous-Crown relations (TRC Call to Action #57). When we do this, we will improve our individual and systemic practice to ensure that we are all moving forward in a good way.
Sincerely,
Mike Magowan
Principal, Copperfield School

In the coming weeks we will be sharing key details that families will need to know. The Winter Celebration is a great learning opportunity for students, and we look forward to a great performance.

ONGOING FUNDRAISERS!
There are many ways you can contribute to the school's fundraising through everyday initiatives. Check out the list of ongoing initiatives here:
HEALTHY HUNGER- Students have the option to order a treat snack and lunch once per month. The next Treat Day is popcorn from Kernels on November 15, and the next Fun Lunch is Edo on December 1. Orders must be placed 6 days in advance and can be placed by creating an account or signing into your existing Healthy Hunger account and adding your student. Parent volunteers are what make these events so successful, and we would love to have anyone that is interested in volunteering and has their volunteer paperwork and CBE clearance come join us.
Volunteer sign up for these events can be done HERE!
SKIP THE DEPOT- You can donate the proceeds from your empty bottles and cans to our school - NO CONTACT REQUIRED! Simply click the link below to sign up for pickups, set your bottles out the morning of pickup and away they go! All proceeds are given back to the school. COBS- like fresh baked goods?! When shopping at COBS, let them know you are with Copperfield School, and they will donate a portion of your purchase to the school!
